More than 1,600 SEIU Local 99 union members and our families enjoyed a beautiful day at Brookside Park in Pasadena with great BBQ, lots of games, some good ol’ softball and (as usual) a fantastic talent show featuring some super-talented kids.

It was a great time to celebrate being UNION STRONG as we wrap up another school year. And it’s a great way to introduce the kids to the importance of a good union job! As we heard both Special Ed. Assistant Gilbert Feliciano and Class A Driver Angel Valera say from the microphone as we picnicked, they first learned about being a union member from their union member dads. They learned that it’s important to have a voice at work; that sometimes our bosses need to see our strength (…in numbers…in unity) before they’ll respect our voice!

Here are some highlights from the day:

  • Lot’s of prize winners at our game booth, talent show, and our hourly raffles: gift cards for gas, Food4Less,  Target and movie tickets!
  • Balloon art, giant slide, ice cream (now that was popular!), dominoes, bingo and more!
  • The Schools Federal Credit union assisted members in need.
  • Multiple sign-ups to receive canned food bags to help our brothers and sisters in need during this summer.
  • We had a bunch of folks sign-up to participate in another fun summer event: The Special Olympics Plane Pull
  • Great member conversations regarding how to get the most out of health benefits with Kaiser Permanente.
