Thank you to all the SEIU Local 99 members who joined our Midnight Ride to Sacramento on April 28-29, 2015 to speak out for summer unemployment insurance for school workers and a voice and collective bargaining rights for child care providers. We kicked things off with a night time rally at Local 99’s main office and then nearly 100 Local 99 members boarded buses to speak out in Sacramento!
We made a difference!
We visited more than 60 legislators’ offices throughout the day and held a special meeting with Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley Thomas, the author of Assembly Bill 399: The Education Workers Summer Relief Act. The bill passed in the Assembly Insurance Committee, the first step in the legislative process. However, it did not make it through the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Our fight to win this legislation will continue and we can be proud of the work we’ve done so far to move our message forward.
Senate Bill 548: The Raising Child Care Quality and Accessibility Act passed in the Assembly Labor Committee the very day we held our morning rally attended by State Senators Holly Mitchell and Hannah-Beth Jackson, members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, which has been working to improve access to child care in California. We were also joined by Assemblyman Isadore Hall.
